As we come into the cooler months, there can be a temptation to bunker down and stay inside. Whilst we fully condone enjoying hearty dinners and wine in the comfort of your own home, we can’t recommend enough the pleasure of enjoying a good red around the campfire.
Whether you’re happy to rough it or like to have a few luxuries, we’ve compiled a list of camping spots to suit all tastes. Best of all, they’re all within an hour of Pokolbin, so you can visit our cellar door for supplies before heading off on your adventure!
Camping Spot #1
Wollombi Tavern Campground
Nestled in the Wollombi Valley, Wollombi Tavern is both a classic Aussie pub and the location of an idylic camping spot. It’s a great base for exploring the countryside via Tourist Drive 33, and for those who like some creature comforts, your close proximity to the Tavern means you can have a hot pub meal before hopping into your tent.

Camping Spot #2
Gap Creek Campground
Situated in the Watagans National Park, Gap Creek campground is surrounded by red cedars and blue gums, which are home to a whole host of birdlife. From the campground, you can take a walking track to Gap Creek Falls through spectacular dense rainforest. This waterfall is impressive after heavy rain and drops 40m from top to bottom.

Camping Spot #3
Cranky Rock Campground
Stay at Cranky Rock campground at night and explore the surrounding Wollombi and Yengo National Park areas by day. The hikes around Mount Yengo are a great day trip. This grassy campground is surrounded by tall trees and is abundant for birdwatchers and animal-lovers.

Wine Country Tourist Park
Finally, for those who’d prefer to just dip their toes in the camping scene or are looking for an affordable accommodation option when visiting the Hunter Valley, the Wine Country Tourist Park is a great option. It has a range of accommodation options including powered campsites, and has plenty of facilities. Best of all, it’s smack-bang in the middle of Hunter Valley Wine Country and is just a 7 minute drive from Ivanhoe!
