Obviously, our top pick for your 2025 Hunter Valley itinerary is Ivanhoe Wines. Perched on the hill along Marrowbone Road, our vineyard offers spectacular views, bold handcrafted wines, and warm, family hospitality that makes every visit unforgettable.

However, while you’re here in the heart of wine country, why not make the most of it? The Hunter is brimming with boutique vineyards—many just minutes from our front gate—that are well worth a visit. From family-run favourites to modern cellar doors with a twist, there’s a whole world of wine to explore nearby—and we’ve got the insider tips to help you plan the perfect day out.

With over 160 years of family winemaking heritage behind him, Lewis Drayton, from Ivanhoe’s very own wine-making family, has tasted his way through the best of the Valley. Below, you’ll find not only the best vineyards to explore while you’re here—but also Lewis’ hot tips for each location.

Here’s how to experience the Hunter like a local:

1. Tinklers

Just 3 minutes west of Ivanhoe

A true family-run vineyard with roots deep in the Hunter Valley, Tinklers is nestled along Pokolbin Mountains Road, just a quick drive from Ivanhoe. Their small-batch wines are made from grapes grown on their own vineyard, and their Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay are particularly impressive. The rustic cellar door, set among peppercorn trees and citrus groves, offers a peaceful country charm that’s hard to beat.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: one of the most delicious Tempranillo I’ve ever had! The Rose is also very playful and great with a cheese board on a sunday afternoon (speaking from experience!)

2. Savannah Estate Mt View

Around 7 minutes South East of Ivanhoe

Situated on Mount View Road, Savannah Estate is a scenic drive from Ivanhoe through the heart of Pokolbin. Owned by the Petersons family and operated by Savannah Peterson, this boutique cellar door brings a blend of modern flair and family heritage. Expect bold reds, delightful sparkling wines, and warm hospitality in a relaxed, cottage-style setting.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: Some delicious Spanish and Italian varietals. My top pick is the Marsanne and the Hunter Valley Gruner Veltliner- but they are all delicious! Some of my favourite whites to enjoy in the pool during summer.

3. Thomas Allen Wines

Under 10 minutes down the road

Located just around the corner from Ivanhoe on Broke Road, Thomas Allen Wines is as convenient as it is charming. The cellar door boasts stunning views over the valley and a range of wines in classic Hunter styles, with favourites like the ‘Mango Tree Chardonnay’ and ‘The Doctor’. It’s the perfect stop either side of your Ivanhoe tasting.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: Seriously good wine. My No1 pick is the Mango Tree Chardonnay. The 1985 Riesling is also perfect to sip by the fire late at night.

4. Petersons Wines Broke Rd

Only 8 minutes North of Ivanhoe

Just a short drive along McDonalds Road, Petersons is one of the region’s most established names. Known for the Best Aged Reds, this picturesque estate features a rustic cellar door, superb service and an extensive selection of premium wines.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: Red wine galore. My favourite is the IHP Shiraz or Figtree Shiraz.

5. Ben Ean

Approximately 2 minutes north of Ivanhoe

Set on the original and historical site of Lindeman’s, Ben Ean is located on McDonalds Road and offers a lively atmosphere with a full-service restaurant, wine tastings, and boutique shopping. Their wines span a wide range of varietals, and the courtyard is a great spot for lunch after a morning at Ivanhoe Wines.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: A one stop shop. The wine selection is wide and varied, the food is delicious and the patisserie has some of the best coffee in Pokolbin!

6. Saddler’s Creek Wines

Just under 5 minutes South of Ivanhoe

A stone’s throw from our vineyard, Saddler’s Creek sits on Marrowbone Road just a few minutes’ drive away. Their ‘Bluegrass’ range of bold reds is a local favourite, and the relaxed outdoor tasting spaces make it a great spot to wind down. Keep an eye out for their twilight sessions and live music events.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: Start your weekend here on a Friday afternoon/evening! Super relaxed vibe, delicious food and sensational wine. My favourite is their Wildwhite while the sun is up, and then one of the Reds from the Italian Suitcase range after dark.

7. Irongate Estate

About 4 minutes east of Ivanhoe

Tucked away on Oakey Creek Road, Irongate Estate is a boutique vineyard offering old-world charm and award-winning wines. Their Semillon and Chardonnay are standouts, and the Tuscan-inspired cellar door gives a taste of Europe in the heart of the Hunter. It’s a lovely detour on your way to or from Ivanhoe.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: Massive lover of their Primera range of wines. Balanced and delicious. A sneaky little number is also their Sparkling Red- Perfect with a curry or roast duck!

8. The Parched Crow

A quick 6-minute drive from Ivanhoe

Just across the historical McDonalds Flat on De Beyers Road, The Parched Crow is a fresh face in the Hunter with a fun, modern twist. The cellar door is bright and airy, with a lineup of vibrant, approachable wines perfect for relaxed sipping. Their playful branding and friendly team make for a memorable stop during your wine trail.

Lewis’ Hot Tip: The Blanc de Blanc is very refreshing, while the reds are true and honest to the Hunter Valley style. A must visit for a fun tasting with Lisa and Ross!
