Ever wondered what it takes to get that beautiful bottle of Ivanhoe wine from our barrel room to your table? There’s a bit of magic, plenty of precision, and a fair amount of clinking glass along the way.
We’re proud to share a peek behind the curtain — and if you scroll below, you’ll see a short reel we’ve put together of the bottling line in action.
From Barrel to Bottle
Once our winemakers are satisfied that a wine is complete and ready for bottling, the wine is transferred to tank. This helps us keep everything stable and consistent before bottling. It’s a critical moment — all the years of nurturing the vines and careful winemaking lead up to this.
At this stage, we run the wine through a gentle filtration process to remove any final sediments. This keeps your wine clear and bright in the glass — just as you’d expect when you pop the cork.
Bottling Day
Bottling is one of the busiest times of year for Ivanhoe. We love watching our wines make their way through the bottling line, hearing the rattle of empty glass, and the clink as each bottle is filled, sealed, and labelled.
Every bottle passes through the same careful steps:
CLEANING
Before a single drop of wine goes in, every bottle is thoroughly cleaned and sterilised. It’s a simple but crucial step — we want to make sure nothing interferes with the pure flavours our winemakers have spent years crafting. Sparkling clean glass means a pristine pour in your glass, every time.
FILLING
Next comes the filling line — arguably the heart of the whole process. The wine flows steadily into each bottle under gentle pressure. This helps keep oxygen exposure to an absolute minimum, protecting the wine’s freshness, aroma and taste. It’s mesmerising to watch: a smooth, steady stream of liquid gold or crimson finding its new home.
SEALING
Once filled, each bottle moves down the line to be sealed. Many of our wines are closed with a screw cap — a tried and tested way to keep the wine as fresh as the day it was bottled. Some special drops are sealed with a traditional cork - this all depends on the wine and how we’d like it to age. Whichever closure we use, the goal is the same: to lock in all that flavour and character until you’re ready to enjoy it.
LABELLING
Finally, it’s time for the finishing touch — the label. Every bottle is carefully dressed in our Ivanhoe label, proudly showcasing the wine’s name and vintage. It’s the moment when the bottle is no longer just glass and wine — it’s a part of our story, ready to make its way from our cellar to your table.

The Final Touch
Once sealed and labelled, our bottles are carefully boxed and stored for a short period to let them settle. For some wines, this resting time helps the flavours knit together before release.
It’s all about delivering the quality and character you’ve come to love from Ivanhoe — whether you’re enjoying a glass (and the views) on our cellar door verandah or sharing a bottle with friends at home.
We love knowing that each bottle carries a piece of our story. So next time you open one, you’ll know just how much care went into every drop.
